Do I Have Medium Volume Hair?

The volume of hair refers to the number of strands of your head.  This is key to understanding how to maintain healthy hair, plus it’s good to know so that you can find the right style that won’t damage your hair.

The average person has approximately 2,200 hairs per square inch.  If you have medium volume hair then you have about that amount of hairs on your head.  To determine if your hair is medium volume, for naturals, put your hair up in a ponytail and measure its circumference.  If it measures two to four inches, then your hair is considered medium/regular volume.

Another way to determine your hair volume is to stand in front of a mirror and let your hair loose.  Hold a small mirror and check to see if your scalp is visible from anywhere,  If your scalp is somewhat visible you have medium volume hair.  If you can’t see your scalp, that means high volume hair; the opposite is true for low density hair–if you can visibly see your scalp you have low density hair.

Medium volume hair has few limitations in terms of products or hairstyles you can achieve. Your hair responds well to a wide range of hair care products.  You have the flexibility to enhance volume with light leave-ins and sprays or reduce volume with hair butters.
