Characteristics of High Porosity Hair

START HERE if you want to know whether your hair is medium porosity.

Porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb moisture and hair products easily.  Once you know your hair porosity, it will help you to determine which types of products work best for your hair. You can find out your hair’s porosity by doing the porosity test; simply place a strand of hair into a glass of water.  If the hair strand sinks to the bottom of the glass, you have high porosity hair.

High porosity hair has gaps in the cuticle which results in the retention of too much moisture in the hair.  This can leave the hair to be frizzy or tangled easily particularly in humid weather.  This type of hair tends to lose moisture easily so it’s important to use leave-in conditioners, moisturizers and sealers that will help the hair hold moisture.  A heavy hair butter is also useful to help fill the gaps in the damaged cuticles and to further protect hair from losing too much moisture.
