Characteristics of Medium Porosity Hair
START HERE if you want to know whether your hair is medium porosity.
Your hair’s porosity is the level at which your hair absorbs and holds moisture. Understanding your hair porosity is very important when it comes to taking care of your hair, and even more important than knowing your hair type. As such, knowing your hair porosity level will help you better care for and maintain healthy hair.
The cuticles on your hair shaft are what determine the level of moisture that is lost or retained on your hair. Normal or medium porosity hair is in the middle of the range. This type of hair absorbs and retains moisture easily and gives hair elasticity.
You can find out your hair’s porosity by doing the porosity test; simply place a strand of hair into a glass of water. If the hair floats below the surface of the water but above the bottom of the glass, your hair is well-balanced and your porosity level is normal.
Medium porosity hair requires the least amount of care and daily maintenance. Because the cuticle layer is looser, it tends to retain the right balance of moisture in the hair. Regular maintenance should include occasional deep conditioning treatments with protein conditioners, however, proteins are not recommended for daily use.
